If Schurrle wasn’t the man of the match already, he would’ve definitely been mine today! He was awesome right from the start until the end. In our second Champions League game of the season, we won big time, 4-0 away against Steaua Bucuresti! Two goals by Ramires, a goal by Lampard, and even an own goal helped us get our first win in the CL! Here’s what happened today:
I loved Mourinho’s lineup today. I felt that we had the perfect combination to get a solid win. Good blend of attacking and defensive players.
Schurrle started off with a bang. He had a chance in the 3rd minute! It was close too! He ran the ball around the side and tried to curl it in. The momentum was exactly what we needed to see from the whole team today. Poor Torres. 10th minute, he gets substituted out of the game because he was injured. I feel so bad for him and hope he is okay. I did not want to see him out of the game, his confidence has been so strong. Just so happy that the FA didn’t hate us and punish him more for no reason! 20th minute, Ramires passes to Schurrle, who goes flying down the field (like he does all day really) with the ball. Eto’o gets the first touch towards the goal, and Ramires finishes it off to get the goal! Ramires basically set up his own play! Very pleased that it didn’t take too long to score. Although the possession was an even 50-50 in the first half, we had more chances. You could see the holes in Steaua’s midfield, which was good for us of course. They had some chances though too, but our backfield & Cech were able to prevent them. Right before halftime, 44th minute, defender’s worst nightmare. Eto’o was taking his shot on target, the goalie pushes it away, but the Steaua defender must’ve really wanted Eto’o to get his goal because he kicks it right in! Thank you for the OG Steaua! Very comfortable going into halftime with the 2-0 lead. I was just hoping that we would hold onto the lead and get this crucial away win.
Thankfully our momentum did not stop in the second half. Schurrle was strong as ever, working the ball down and creating chances for both himself and his fellow midfielders. He basically took over the role that Torres had during Saturday’s match. 55th minute, Schurrle passes the ball to Oscar, who then passes to Ramires, who scores from distance! Brace for Ramires, great job!! My favorite part of that whole moment though was Schurrle & Mourinho. Schurrle ran over to him and they tightly hugged for a good 7 seconds. It was amazingly funny. I am so happy that the camera went over to them because that made my day. The Brazilians all celebrated in normal Brazilian style which was cute too and we were up 3-0. After the goal, Cech had a good save, but he almost injured himself over it! He bumped his back/head into the post. I am so relieved that he is okay. Besides that moment, there was another too-close-for-call Steaua chance. Even my commentators admitted that it wouldn’t have been fair if we didn’t get a clean sheet, that’s how much we earned it. The game wasn’t over yet at the 90th minute. Eto’o set up a pass to Willian, who gave it to Lamps. Lamps kicks it, hits the edge of the post and goes in. It wasn’t a typical “Frank Lampard goal” but still good nonetheless! Super Frank put his stamp on the game and we definitely got some room for the next leg.
Fun fact I heard during the game. Apparently no team who lost the first game of the CL has won it all. Well we’re here to (hopefully) change that! We break records all the time, it’s possible. On to Sunday’s match against Norwich City! Lets keep this momentum going. As always, KTBFFH! :)
